So I (19F) used to be online in servers when I was around 17-18. There was this guy on them (13-14M) who had obvious mental issues as he would constantly rant, vent, and have to “take breaks” because his girlfriend said he was having a breakdown. Eventually, his girlfriend’s friend introduced a friend that kept bullying Mentally Ill Guy, and Bully called him things like an inbred freak and a piece of shit, mocking him for online dating and encouraging that if he was so mentally ill, he SHOULD kill himself. I found Bully rather sassy and the things he said were funny, and I know I shouldn’t have laughed at the stupid kid, but he was so pathetic and Bully was so funny that I just had to laugh. AITA for finding it funny? Mentally Ill Kid was kinda my friend, but he ended up never speaking to me again afterwards and this was on my old Discord account so I lost contact with him.

    NTA (on a technicality)

If you cut out all the context and just posed the question as “someone said some sassy shit which made me laugh, does laughing in private make me an asshole?”, then I’m sure you’d get a lot of replies saying something like “you can’t choose what you find funny”

    However, YTA for other reasons:

    • letting the bully say ‘inbred freak’, ‘piece of shit’ and ‘kill yourself’ is not “sassy”. Being sassy is saying something like…
    • labeling someone as pathetic for having a mental illness is judgemental and hypocritical.
    • by failing to call out the bully’s behaviour, you endorsed it.
    • if you laughed publicly, then you encouraged it.
