Local CB is still a good time in some areas depending on if you have any groups around you. I commute every day, and it’s been useful and entertaining on the highway, just bullshitting with the truckers, even with people shouting nonsense in dx land, but fm is hilarious since absolutely noone uses it.

problem is meshtastic is 900MHz, power output limitations and duty cycle limits on that band are annoying also its basically just line of sight due to the high frequency

Alright, thanks for a detailed answer, I don’t know much about radio, but I have been looking into meshtastic

i like the concept of meshtastic but, sadly i have never seen it working in reality, range in urban settings is basically 150m tops, and routing causes massive issues, battery usage is way higher than expected, and most problematic…LoRa itself isnt a free standart, its a proprietary radio standard making true open source implements impossible, all the lora radios depend on some specific hardware chips with closed firmware on em

Meshtastic is really cool. Any large city should have a set of routers already in place, and those can get you miles. I’m able to communicate with people 17 and a half miles away with the routers easily, but it really depends on your area. My city has a population of about 40,000, so any bigger than that, and you’re likely to have an even better time with it than I do. Any less than that, and you could have real problems for now.
