Is there a tool to check the extra data and verify if a drive is or isn’t counterfit?
Basically no, if you didn’t buy directly from seagate you just can’t really know.
Firmware can be updated, labels faked, serial numbers changed.
Damn it, I am right now in the market for seven 8TB drives, and I am looking at the Seagate Ironwolf Pro NT drives…
If Seagate’s FARM is really unforgeable as the article says, then you can check it with
smartctl -l farm /dev/sda
.
