Acknowledging the issues and having a plan is a first good sign of trust. Executing is the other, so we’ll see how this will going. I personally lost trust and interest into Manjaro and switched away. From personal experience, there were technical issues (caused by Manjaro), and social issues (didn’t like the administration and project leader). But I hope they “recover” and be better, and survive.

  • This is a tough question to answer, there is so much to choose from. I didn’t play most of them. But I think there are interesting ones as a starting point:

    Super Mario World_

    • Hack: Series of short mods with interesting gimmics and level ideas.
    • 'the: A non jump and run game, more like an atmospheric adventure, a creepypasta experience.
    • Castlemania: Inspired by NES Castlevania style and retro look, a hard game.
    • SMW Friends and Rivalry: A more traditional Mario like level design. Full on game with over 90 levels

    Chrono Trigger_

    • Crimson Echoes: A very high quality production and maybe the best Chrono Trigger Romhack. This was actually never really finished officially, because it got hit by a cease and desist by Square. There is also Flames of Eternity, which took Crimson Echoes and worked on it without permission. Therefore its very controversal.
    • Prophets Guile: From the same guys who made Crimson Echoes, another high quality mod. This one is short. It tells the story of Magus, how he rise to power in Kingdom of Zeal.

    Final Fantasy 6_

There are actually lots of these complete rebalance and feature rich improvements. I just picked on of them here.

    • A Soldiers Contingency (Extended Bestiary Edition): Comprehensive gameplay expansion and overhaul. It’s still the same game, but less tedious battles and no grinding, rebalancing and ton of features and addons.

    Super Mario Kart_

    • Hyper Street Kart: With characters and items from Street Fighter. It is not the best mod, but noteworthy theme and very popular.
    • Mario Kart R: Another popular mod. Has new courses, music and graphics.
    • Reverse (Mirror Mode): If you just want to play the same game, but racing to the other direction instead.

    F-Zero_

    Zelda 3_

    • Parallel Remodel: A rework on one of the most popular and old Romhacks for this game, called Parallel Worlds that was known for extreme difficulty. This tries to make it better playable and fair.
    • The Hunters Song: A relatively new mod, with 3 new dungeons and story. I actually don’t know too much about this one, it seems to be popular.
    • Conkers High Rule Tail: A complete change fo the game. Play as Conker from Conkers BAd Fur Day with lots of new stuff.

    Super Metroid_

    • Redesign Axeil Edition: Another rework of a classic mod named Redesign, that tries to make it better playable. There are new items, changed physics, new abilities and so on. Still a hard game to play.
    • Ancient Chozo: It is based off the original maps, but expands it with new rooms, graphics, puzzles, music and so on.

    Star Fox_

    • EX: (just play v1.11) New levels, bosses, musics, graphics and ton of features! Play in wireframe mode or use SNES mouse.
    • Sunlits STar Fox Minihack: (just play FastRom version) 6 new levels basically. I don’t have much information, but people like it.

    Donkey Kong Country_

    • Kremlings Revenge Remodel: It is a rework of an older mod. There are new graphics, levels and bonuses. Should be as difficult as the original game.

Look into their description, to learn a bit more before getting into. Or just run them and see what you get.

  • I don’t understand the logic. Why would Proton make Linux dependent on Windows binaries? It does not make Linux dependent, but enables to use them. I don’t see any reason why Valve should demand devs to build Linux builds (plus Valve should not demand it, it should be a decision of the developers, Valve should not have that much power in my opinion).

if microsoft changed their apis wouldnt new games just not work on proton?

The same would happen with changes in Linux. And arguably it is worse on Linux. Windows binaries have a higher chance of working through WINE or Proton, than Linux binaries in the future. Plus developers only need one binary build, instead developing for Linux and Windows. Also if Microsoft changes their API, then only games affected using the new API would be affected. And changes and additions happen all the time and the Proton / WINE devs are working all the time too.

  • I think lots of people have a problem or could get a problem with that, and don’t realize it. I mean it is similar to the shitty microtransactions situation on smartphone games. I say similar in the sense, that most people don’t have a problem with it, compared to the population and how many have a problem. This should not be an excuse for exploitation of the weak ones.

But besides that, I don’t even think its a problem with a few only. Even the potential of getting addicted is bad. There are reasons why children (i mean under 18) are not allowed in casinos. Are these games and the gambling with CS:GO and Team Fortress 2 for 18+ only? Whatever it is, we all know younger people play these games too. If not the microphone is a good indication… but I digress here. I hope the market place in Steam will go away. There is no good reason for, other than Valve making money. There is not benefit for humanity or the people.

BTW the situation with my bro was not that too bad, just saying. It was a slight problem, but one that showed me first hand (or is it second hand?). I am also glad you made it through your difficult times.
