3·26 days agoLaying off 20% of your workforce isn’t a good look, especially when you keep betting your company on the wrong things (e.g. pivot to video, cryptocurrency, metaverse). It’s looking like Facebook will wither on the vine since young people are largely opting to not use it

United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•Trump begged foreign leaders 'like a dog' to help him out of Iran jam: DC insiderEnglish
5·1 month agoVery interesting seeing how Pete Hegseth’s philosophy of “maximum lethality” ran its course, and yet…
- Iran has come out the other side with more leverage despite taking big losses
- Trump is desperate to end his (illegally started) war
- Conservatives like Tucker Carlson have turned on him for his statement on Easter and calls for genocide
Seems like a complete miss. I’m reminded of this recent Atlantic article…
Donald Trump does not think strategically. Nor does he think historically, geographically, or even rationally. He does not connect actions he takes on one day to events that occur weeks later. He does not think about how his behavior in one place will change the behavior of other people in other places. He does not consider the wider implications of his decisions. He does not take responsibility when these decisions go wrong. Instead, he acts on whim and impulse, and when he changes his mind—when he feels new whims and new impulses—he simply lies about whatever he said or did before.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•In your opinion, is space exploration necessary?English
21·1 month agoThe ingenuity and innovation required to make space travel possible (and efficient) is remarkable. Definitely falls into the category of “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” It’s important to continue challenging ourselves as a species.

4·1 month agoPeople live in places that are pleasant. It’s why Silicon Valley billionaires threatening to leave California over the proposed wealth tax is ridiculous. It would take decades to move the industry and talent pool out of there. Plus the tax is based on where they lived on Jan. 1, 2026, so they’re already on the hook.
There’s also often a conflict of interest between their videos’ subject matter and what classes they’re selling

Privacy@lemmy.ml•How much proof is there that smart tvs and phones listen to you?English
62·2 months agoKnowing what you’re watching on the screen is different than what you’re saying out loud near the TV or remote. Plus almost all TVs can run without an internet connection too, which renders this concern somewhat null

Privacy@lemmy.ml•How much proof is there that smart tvs and phones listen to you?English
5·2 months agoThere’s no need for uploading a constant audio feed or transcript (something that would be easy for researchers to detect in the network logs) to show you an advertisement like that.
Your phone knows all the things you wrote in the post, namely: your location, that you are physically with those friends, the wifi network, the search history of everyone there. Because of all that metadata, advertisers probably know you were playing a TTRPG, maybe even the specific one

Direct quote: “10 years ago, Republicans were the party of big business and Dems stood for the little guys, but today the tables have completely turned.”
This is laughably incorrect. Then he turned around and repeatedly said his statement was politically neutral.
