  • I don’t think they’re going out of their way to misrepresent the software.

But if you’re excusing it for being a “turn of phrase”, then it’s a poor choice of turn of phrase.

Both Day One and Apple Journal, which this software is proudly positioned as an alternative to, marketed themselves on “personal” and “private”, not “for the family”.

Which could make sense, if it was designed around family-oriented features. But it’s not.

And it’s not like there’s a lack of options:

    • Give yourself an early Christmas present with
    • Host your own thanksgiving, with
    • Preserve the moments that matter with
    • This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for your support
    • Host your Thanksgiving memories at home with
    • Bon Appétit, Journiv is self-hosted for the holidays
    • This Thanksgiving, own what you write

But “give your family the gift of memories of memories that last forever”?

  • I’m half-convinced they did this whole project just so they could call it COOL.

Collabora Online (COOL) is the company’s open-source solution for document editing and collaboration online and at scale. COOL provides a consistent, discoverable user interface (UI) designed with intuitive toolbars and a tabbed interface, which focuses on the tools most people use every day and enables current users to get their work done without clutter.

Patriotism as a feeling of exclusive love for one’s own people, and as a doctrine of the virtue of sacrificing one’s tranquillity, one’s property, and even one’s life, in defence of the weak among them from slaughter and outrage hy their enemies, was the highest idea of the period when each nation considered it feasible and just, to subject to slaughter and outrage the people of other nations for its own advantage.

The way Tolstoy uses the word aligns with the negative, exclusive definition of the word:

The desire to compete sharply with, and perhaps also dominate, other nations; nationalism.

and not the positive sense of the word:

Love of one’s country; devotion to the welfare of one’s compatriots; passion which inspires one to serve one’s country.

That makes sense, because he didn’t have access to the word nationalism as a means to distinguish between the two. The word “nationalism” doesn’t appear a single time in Patriotism and Government or in Patriotism, or Peace?.

And that makes sense. The word nationalism didn’t see common usage until well after he published that piece (in 1900).

We’re not “inventing” good patriotism now, because it was already “invented” over the course of the past 100 years.

We now have access to both words, allowing us to distinguish between the positive and negative aspects of that love.

Leo Tolstoy’s writing is timeless in a lot of ways, but when we’re talking about terms, it’s important to take into account what those terms meant when they were used.

  • Check your math.

Under federal law, Members of Congress qualify for a pension, funded in part with taxpayer contributions, only after completing five full years of service. Greene began serving on January 3, 2021, and her departure date leaves her with 1,829 days of service — five years and three days, just enough to meet the eligibility threshold. Her pension would start at $8,717 at age 62, and based on actuarial data, could total more than $265,000 over her lifetime.

  • Most activism groups aren’t really screening for membership.

Usually it’s, “you want to join ? Cool, I’ll add you.”

Edit: Just read the article. They went out of their way to try to make it sound like this group was up to something other than legally show up to immigrant court and keep watch for heinous police behavior.

The memo did not provide any further details about the individual or their alleged past calls for violence and offered no specifics or evidence to explain why the FBI characterized them as “anarchist violent extremists”. The courtwatch efforts have been non-violent, and the FBI did not respond to an inquiry seeking specific examples of violence and did not answer questions about whether law enforcement had ongoing access to the private group.
