  • There were (are?) some non-free proprietary parts to it, along with a subscription to emulate android apps. As far ad I know they were slowly open sourcing more and more of the special sauces.

But also according to many users on their forum, it has been a very mediocre to bad experience for many people such that many or most people who use sailfish do so while having to carry a second phone to access basic functions like receiving calls or GPS navigation or similar, which personally defeats the purpose for me.

I am really hoping their new 2026 phone is a complete turnaround and a great experience because we desperately need a daily driver Linux phones.

  • Some people are fine with down time/inconvenience in exchange for security.

I have my boot drive on a secured USB and LUKS keyfile with the rest of the partitions on an encrypted SSD and data on encrypted HDDs.

In a smash and grab (or fascist government gestapo smash and grab), the server is pretty impossible to steal information from (inject illegal content to in order to fabricate evidence) without the USB and they can’t simply inject boot malware either. A network device is almost always findable either by cables or WiFi broadcast analyzing.

  • Sadly I wasn’t able to find my denatured ethonol container when my friend was visiting a bit ago to try out my vintage coffee siphon again. The first time I did it with lamp oil and it turned the whole bottom black that I had to scrub off. The coffee was also decaf and too strong.

I was excited when Hoffman came out with the siphon video and he said he was going to make a guide but he never did.

Sadly it makes way too much coffee for one person. My partner doesn’t drink coffee.
