I think that works in most of the world but the US has too many people who make money from fossil fuels. While we’re not self-sufficient, we’re a very large exporter so on average ……

But I have always wonder why nuclear folks can make an “abundant energy” argument but not renewables.

And I especially like seeing the counter argument to that, those cases where small farmers can stay in business by leasing out a tiny parcel of their land and continuing to use the rest. I don’t know how common that may be in reality but the synergy gives me the chills.

Next bring me a story about a sheep farm on a solar farm and I’m in heaven

  • Google finds a lot of responses saying it has generally been possible

    1. You need to provide evidence that the vehicle meets U.S. federal safety and emissions standards.
    2. But safety and emissions standards have generally been harmonized between us and Canada.

So you can currently buy a car in Canada for the us because passing Canadian requires is proof that it satisfies American requirements. Protectionism does not currently matter but you’d need to cover tariffs. Maybe that will remain true, at least temporarily

  • As always it’s a pr thing and the win could be with very little bloodshed.

American and Canada have had disagreements before and we always will. Not as serious but we’ve always had them. The thing is everyone I know, and the news media at the time, holds Canada in such high regard that we’re on your side. If they did try to invade you’d probably get a hoard of rednecks flooding north but they’d have to come through the northern states and would be held up at every crossroads. They’d drown in a mess of protests before approaching the border

  • I can picture the possibility of a probe visiting our nearest neighbors

But there are so many problems with a generation ship going that far, and no, none of the fun sci fi ways of travel are possible.

Bringing this back to reality, I can definitely see exploring more of the solar system and I can see making use of resources on hand for bulk consumables like fuel, oxygen, water, housing (we’ll have to to make it work). But consider how many things it would take to actually be independent of earth and how large the colony needs to be. Remote bases in our inner solar system can get away with that, but you can’t leave the solar system and expect to rely on any resupplies from earth.

Even if you could achieve the travel time to visit another star system and build a generation ship with enough supplies of everything and that could function that long, how would you survive without a preexisting functional colony of millions of people? Just start with the thousands of types of plastics we use every day and imagine trying to support that for a few people, without oil to drill or other organic chemicals to mine, and without a full scale chemical industry
