This should be so unnecessary. Both wind farms and solar farms are less obtrusive than neighbors!

And I especially like seeing the counter argument to that, those cases where small farmers can stay in business by leasing out a tiny parcel of their land and continuing to use the rest. I don’t know how common that may be in reality but the synergy gives me the chills.
Next bring me a story about a sheep farm on a solar farm and I’m in heaven

I thought I remembered seeing something about an explicit ban a year or so, but trying to find it I see state level registration bans
I have obscure tastes, LoL. Actually I found it most difficult to explain the science and technology background of Nemo to the uninitiated - people just know him as the guy with the submarine but the car and other tech were right in line with the character

4·18 hours agoGoogle finds a lot of responses saying it has generally been possible
- You need to provide evidence that the vehicle meets U.S. federal safety and emissions standards.
- But safety and emissions standards have generally been harmonized between us and Canada.
So you can currently buy a car in Canada for the us because passing Canadian requires is proof that it satisfies American requirements. Protectionism does not currently matter but you’d need to cover tariffs. Maybe that will remain true, at least temporarily

At that point even 20 year old car tech might be more advanced than what we’d be saddled with

World News@lemmy.world•How a US Invasion of Canada Would Really Unfold—And How We Fight BackEnglish
1·19 hours agoAs always it’s a pr thing and the win could be with very little bloodshed.
American and Canada have had disagreements before and we always will. Not as serious but we’ve always had them. The thing is everyone I know, and the news media at the time, holds Canada in such high regard that we’re on your side. If they did try to invade you’d probably get a hoard of rednecks flooding north but they’d have to come through the northern states and would be held up at every crossroads. They’d drown in a mess of protests before approaching the border

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think intergalactic travel will ever be possible?
2·19 hours agoI can picture the possibility of a probe visiting our nearest neighbors
But there are so many problems with a generation ship going that far, and no, none of the fun sci fi ways of travel are possible.
Bringing this back to reality, I can definitely see exploring more of the solar system and I can see making use of resources on hand for bulk consumables like fuel, oxygen, water, housing (we’ll have to to make it work). But consider how many things it would take to actually be independent of earth and how large the colony needs to be. Remote bases in our inner solar system can get away with that, but you can’t leave the solar system and expect to rely on any resupplies from earth.
Even if you could achieve the travel time to visit another star system and build a generation ship with enough supplies of everything and that could function that long, how would you survive without a preexisting functional colony of millions of people? Just start with the thousands of types of plastics we use every day and imagine trying to support that for a few people, without oil to drill or other organic chemicals to mine, and without a full scale chemical industry
Ouch. I liked that movie and always wanted a sequel

1·19 hours agoAnd to be clear, when you occasionally read about someone saying it’s not impossible……. That’s late night bs sessions on illicit substances. Usually the article is really “from our understanding of physics we have this math equation where we can actually enter values and the equation still gives a result, given a list of impossible prerequisites.

7·19 hours agoYes, but also I’m not convinced they haven’t done so by voter suppression. I’ve seen a lot fewer articles on that and that may not be part of voter fraud invests. There continue to be way too many attempts to suppress votes. How do you even count how many votes didn’t happen?
And it only needs to happen in swing states. You combine that with gerrymandering and it doesn’t have to prevent many voters to make a difference

politics @lemmy.world•White House’s chilling warning about midterm elections: ‘Can’t guarantee an ICE agent won’t be around polling locations’
5·20 hours agoI’m sure it doesn’t matter what party you register as, but this is purely racist.
They’re not saying they’ll interfere with elections but they may kidnap anyone who looks like an undocumented immigrant who shouldn’t vote. Generally that’s been people with brown skin.
As a white person who is registered Democrat, I wouldn’t be worried at all. However if I were Hispanic or otherwise not obviously white, I sure as hell would be, and may decide I can’t risk voting
This is exactly what Black Panthers tried to solve half a century ago

I think that works in most of the world but the US has too many people who make money from fossil fuels. While we’re not self-sufficient, we’re a very large exporter so on average ……
But I have always wonder why nuclear folks can make an “abundant energy” argument but not renewables.
