In their suit, bike lane opponents, who include popular Astoria businesses like Parisi Bakery, Sotto la Luna and King Souvlaki, argued that the project would “jeopardize” the safety of cyclists and “increase the likelihood of injuries” to pedestrians — despite city data and mounds of research showing protected bike lanes do the exact opposite.
Said opponents need to be barred from further speaking on the topic. Lying should lose you credibility. Being full-ass wrong should as well.
Fuck cars. I just wanna ride a bike and not worry about dying.
Review brigade time?
I mean, if the picture in the thumbnail is the bike lane… They might have a point. I wouldn’t ride in that.
I blame the judge though for a dumb decision - the street should instead just be remade so the lane is on the side rather than in the middle of cars.
In the article there’s the actual and the proposed structure of the road (https://lede-admin.nyc.streetsblog.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/48/2025/04/31st-St-diagram.png). What you see above is a buffer zone that divides parked cars (right) from the actual bike lane (left, even though there are cars parked).
the bike lane is on the left. there are cars illegally parked in it. The narrow strip is not the bike lane, its the door zone, a 3 ft setback between the parked cars and the bike lane.
The street redesign doesn’t even reduce car capacity. It still has two lanes for cars, and parking on either side, it gets the space by not having unnecessarily wide lanes.
happy cake day!!! 🙂
ew no please don’t

Why the fuck does a judge get to say what the city does. Defi the order hell Trump does.
Anyone can file suit. A judge needs to pass judgement. Hopefully the judge based it on something more legitimate than whining.
The will quickly find someone responsible and put them in jail. Democrats would say there’s no way to enforce it. Republicans don’t fuck around.
Is that what you really want? More people acting like Donald Trump?

No want to fight against fascism
Yeah, sure, fascism bad, however, I’m not sure that, in this case, a bit of judicial assholery is tantamount to fascism. This decision can be appealed and possibly reversed by a higher court.
Looks like the judge is reversing it based on nothing but carbrain, calling the bike lane “arbitrary” and “capricious”. Looks like this whole court is out of order. The key words I pick out are “in violation of lawful procedure”. I don’t like this choice either, but it looks like the city took a shortcut
Ah I didn’t see that part, thank you.
Yeah the judge doesn’t sound so wrong any more.
I guess it depends on if DOT actually violated the law or the judge is ruling on a stretch. I wish had more details.
No kidding. All too often even clear looking articles seem to have important details missing
I’m pretty sure there’s gonna be an appeal. The judge gave 30 days before the order must be executed. He also denied all of the other claims.
This is not a ruling that should be difficult to get reversed on appeal
Can but won’t.
What about this is fascist?
Public funding was used as directed by public officials to build public infrastructure. A judge orders it torn up with no legal basis, attempting to circumvent not only the will of the people, but the law.
It’s certainly not democratic
Just because its not democratic does not make it fascist. When you throw words around hap hazardusly they lose meaning.
Trump ignores the wants of the many to benefit the few. When the many stand up to the few, it’s not the same as what Trump does, it’s the opposite.
Morally you’re right of course. Everyone should follow laws and procedures. Even when others don’t. No disagreement.
But there is a line from the first Foundation book. I’ll paraphrase: Don’t let your sense of morality stop you from doing the right thing.
When you’re playing against a cheater. You’ll follow the rules every time, and loose every time. Which is fine in a game. Especially when you know someone is inforcing the rules and the cheater will be stopped. But when when actual lives are on the line? And the ref is the one cheating? Going against your moral code to do the right thing, becomes the moral thing to do.
That’s what RobbinHood was all about.
I want everyone to stop tripping over themselves to comply with dumb “orders” like this. If that means taking a page out of Trump’s playbook and ignoring them, then yeah, fuck it.
rip up the bike lane and turn it into a sidewalk then rip up the street and turn it into a streetcar and bike lane.
“DOT shall take all steps reasonably necessary to restore 31st Street between 31st Avenue and Newtown Avenue … to substantially the same traffic markings, land configuration, and parking and loading regulations that existed immediately prior to commencement of work on the Safety Project in August 2025,”
Why August 2025? Why not August 1925 or 1725?
The word ‘unprecedented’ will be part of daily vernacular until…
At certain point, everything is just precedented.
I’m so fucking sick of it
If that thumbnail pic is accurate, i dont even see a bike lane… i see two paint lines too close together. Looks super unsafe. I wouldnt even ride in that “bike lane”. I’d prefer to just ride in city traffic like of one of those insane bike couriers
Imagine the ruling was actually: “judge orders bike lane removed… and replaced with an actual separated bike lane…”
The thumbnail picture is accurate it’s just that there’s cars illegally parked in the bike lane. The bike Lane is on the far left.
Thank god the legal system is protecting those lawbreaking drivers against those evil bicyclists!
Doug Ford moment 🥲
